Hunter’s Point South Affordable Housing Lottery Application Period Begins

Posted on 10/18/2014 by New Yorker

The application period for rentals at Phase 1 of the Hunters Point South Development in Long Island City Queens, began on Wednesday 15th October 2014. The long anticipated lottery for these 925 affordable housing units in the burgeoning community finally opened up to the pubic after several years of planning and development.

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of people attended town hall meetings in Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City to hear more about the new development, the eligibility requirements, and how to go about preparing and submitting an application.

The massive seven building high-rise waterfront project will accept applications until December 15, 2014 for two of its properties – Hunter’s Point South Crossing and Hunter’s Point South Commons. Following this, applications will be screened, evaluated and processed by the NYC housing lottery based on low and moderate income levels.

For those who qualify for the “low income” bracket, rents would range from a minimum of $494 per month for a studio to a high of $959 for a three bedroom. For moderate income earners, rents would range from $1,561 for a studio to $4,346 for a three bedroom apartment.

Hunters Point South apartments in both categories will be “permanently affordable”, with rent renewals being determined by federal government and New York City formulas, and not by status or income changes.

The application period which began on October 15, 2014 will close after a 60 day period. Applications can be submitted online at New York Housing Connect (http://nyc.gov/housingconnect) where applicants will be required to create a personal profile with details of their income, assets and household. Current residents of Community Board 2 – representing the areas of Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City and a portion of West Maspeth – will be given priority over outside applicants on 50% of the units. Successful applicants will be notified during the first quarter of 2015, with the goal being to finalise leases in the spring.
