It’s My Park Day

Every year thousands of New Yorkers join the call from Partnerships for Parks, a public-private partnership led by NYC Parks and the City Parks Foundation, and volunteer their time and energy to clean up and care for their neighborhood parks and public spaces. On 25 October, HPPC is organizing It’s My Park Day activities and calling on volunteers to help clean debris and weed the tree beds at Hunter Point Park South. The Conservancy will also be hosting a plant identification activity highlighting the unique fauna who call the park home.

Halloween in LIC

Things are about to get spooky around the neighborhood, with rumblings of various Halloween events and activities roaming the neighborhood … While all details are yet to be confirmed, there has been definite talk of a Halloween Party in the Park, with DJs, Costome Contests and other appropriately festive activities. This event is said to be free and hosted by Nestseekers, with HPPC providing community support. Similar to past years, LIC trick-or-treaters will be able to enjoy another local Halloween Parade with a route spanning the area around the parks, Center Boulevard and Vernon Boulevard, which will be closed off for the time of the parade. Paws & Pints, host of several popular human-kanine mixer events in Hunter’s Point South Park is coming back to throw a Pet Costume Party at LIC Landing. On Oct 25 from 12-4 pm, the events company is partnering with LIC Dog Walk, LIC Landing by Coffeed and HPPC to bring Howlin’ For Halloween to the location of previous gatherings.

Parktoberfest

Looking for a piece of festive German funfair with traditional beer mugs, bratfurst and pretzels to reign in the fall season? The Hunters Point Park Conservancy and LIC Landing are bringing Oktoberfest to Hunter’s Point South Park on Saturday. ParkToberfest serves as a fundraiser for the local community group and for $50 per ticket, attendees will be presented with unlimited beers from breweries such as Singlecut, Harpoon, Radeberger, Hofbrau for the duration of the event, as well as a bratwurst sandwich and music performed by the Street Beat Brass Band, a New York City brass band that plays an eclectic mix of music—from New Orleans Jazz, Mexican Banda, Gospel, Klezmer, and Funk.

Community Carnival in the Park

On Sunday, October 5, the local New City Church will be hosting LIC Community Carnival at Hunters Point Park South from 11 am until 3 pm. The free family focused community event will feature 15 different games and activities for kids to come and play, such as bean bag and grab bag games, pumpkin painting and face painting, along with some great giveaways for parents and raffles, where participants can win gift cards from local restaurants. Patrick Thompson, Lead Pastor at New City Church hopes to turn the carnival into an annual fall event for the community.

Movie Night in the Park

On Saturday September 20 at 7:30 p.m, HPPC, NestSeekers International and LIC Landing will present the Academy Award nominated film Julie and Julia on the oval at Hunter’s Point South Park by the NY Waterways Ferry.

Silent Disco in the Park

Get ready for a massive outdoor dance party under the stars right here at the LIC waterfront – and the good news is, it won’t disturb your neighbors either. On September 12, the Lincoln Center is hosting Silent Disco in Queens as part of its effort to bring art and entertainment programs to all the boroughs of New York City. The latest craze in nightlife, quiet clubbing or silent disco encourages partygoers to shake it up to the latest beats, which are delivered via wireless headphones. For observers, the event will appear odd as dancers move to “silent” beats.

Beach Volleyball League at LIC Beach

Now in its third season, LIC Sunset Concerts 2014 features 5 free outdoor concerts showcasing 14 unique Long Island City based musicians sponsored by more than 20 local businesses. Paws and Pints – Round 2

Following the success of the inaugural event in June, the canine events company Paws and Pints will host its second charitable dog and beer mixer. Last month saw over 150 dogs and dog owners attend and today even bigger crowds are expected. The event will feature activities for the dogs, such as a doggy pool and doggy agility courses, as well as on site vets, dog trainers, doggy day care and representatives from Patriot Paws, one of the charities being supported by this event. LIC Landing will be providing drink and food specials for all attendees.
